On 1st May 2023, Tom joined Hampshire Music Service as the new incoming Musical Director of the Hampshire County Youth Orchestra and the Hampshire County Youth Chamber Orchestra.
Tom studied conducting at The Royal Northern College of Music and has since spent several years as a freelance conductor, working with the BBC Philharmonic, Dutch National Opera Academy, North Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, and Manchester Camerata, as well as contemporary ensembles Psappha, AskoSchönberg, and the Aarhus Sinfonietta. He has led rehearsals with the London Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Ulster Orchestra, Royal Ballet Sinfonia, and the Netherlands Philharmonic.
Within Education, Tom has worked at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music as the conductor of their Symphony Orchestra, delivered conducting masterclasses to students, and coached chamber ensembles, including sessions exploring historical performance practice. Tom has also managed the team responsible for wellbeing at the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain and led the music programmes at Four Winds Westward Ho (Washington, USA) for several years.
Tom is incredibly passionate about youth music, and the role that HCYO has in supporting the musical, personal, and social development of young people. We all look forward to working with and supporting Tom in his new role.
