This concert welcomed around 140 ex-members of HCYO and featured four conductors. It was the second day of a weekend of spectacular performances from both current and ex-members celebrating 50 years of Hampshire County Youth Orchestra at The Anvil.

Fanfare fur die Wiener Philharmoniker by Richard Strauss conducted by Carl Clausen
This brass fanfare was written in 1924 for the Wiener Philharmoniker’s first benefit ball, a fundraiser for the musician’s pension fund.
Adagio from 2nd Symphony by Sergei Rachmaninoff conducted by Edgar Holmes
This beautiful adagio was played by HCYO on their tour of Australia in 1979 with the solo then played by Michael Whight who returned to play it for the 50th Anniversary Celebration. Michael Whight plays clarinet as principal in the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Finale – A London Symphony by Ralph Vaughan Williams conducted by Nicholas Wilks
This was the first piece Nick Wilks conducted with HCYO and was in fact his audition piece. This four-movement symphony originally performed in 1914 and later published in 1936, was developed from sketches for a symphonic poem and conveys the atmosphere of London before the First World War.

Celebrate! by Jonathan Willcocks conducted by Connor Lyster
The celebrations began with a world premiere of a piece written by our patron, Jonathan Willcocks who has supported the orchestra for many years. This commission was made possible by financial support from the Friends of Hampshire County Youth Orchestra.
Finale from 5th Symphony by Dmitri Shostakovich conducted by Carl Clausen
This youth orchestra classic has featured in HCYO programmes regularly over the years, helping to form young players.

This ultimate HCYO piece always played as an encore and a tradition that is still upheld in HCYO today.
