This Spring Concert by Hampshire County Youth Orchestra and Hampshire County Youth String Orchestra was performed to raise funds for the Friends of HCYO, in aid of the 2023 Bryanston course.

The evening opened with Adagietto from Symphony No 5 by Gustav Mahler. Preparation for this piece was originally started just before the first lockdown so it seemed fitting to play it as a celebration of a long awaited return to the Anvil for the first time since 2019. It is also appropriate given the Korngold violin concerto played later in the evening as Korngold dedicated his concerto to Mahler’s wife Alma. Mahler’s Adagietto was itself a love song to his wife.

From: Symphony No. 97 in C Major by Joseph Haydn arr. Salomon

This symphony was one of twelve popular arrangements known as the ‘London’ symphonies, composed by Haydn very specifically with the English market in mind and published by German violinist and concert promoter Johann Peter Salmon who invited Haydn to conduct in London.

The orchestra played Violin Concerto op 35 by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, dedicated to Alma Mahler, a family friend and fellow exile.

Following the interval we were treated to some exuberant and rather excitingly jazzy Hindemith.
