The 3rd Winchester Symphony Orchestra Young Soloist Competition 2018

Every other year, since 2014, the Winchester Symphony Orchestra runs a young soloist competition.  The auditions for 2018 were run earlier in the year and four finalists were chosen.

Two of those selected are Sophie Osborne, HCYO’s principal clarinettist and Emma Paterson one of the violinists!  The four finalists will perform their concerto with the WSO at Romsey Abbey on Thursday 5th July 2018, conducted by Nicholas Wilks.  The evening will begin at 18.30 and tickets, when on sale, can be purchased via Romsey Abbey.

The programme will be:

Weber

Clarinet Concerto No. 1 in F minor

Horovitz

Euphonium Concerto

Rosauro

Concerto for Marimba and String Orchestra No. 1

Mozart

Violin Concerto No. 3 in G major, K. 216

The adjudicators for the evening will be conductors Christopher Seaman and John Traill.

2014 saw Matthew Crisp, ex leader of the CYO, in the finals when he played Bruch Violin Concerto along with Jenny Whitby, who was one of CYO’s flautists and she performed the Nielsen Flute Concerto.  Jenny took the 2014 title when she was announced the winner of the Winchester Symphony Orchestra Young Soloist Competition.

In 2016 three musicians from the CYO were in the final.  Nick Budd played the Hummel Trumpet Concerto, Luke Roberts, who performed the Oboe Concerto by Vaughan Williams and Matthew Lloyd-Wilson performed Mendelssohn Violin Concerto.  Matthew took the title of 2016 Winchester Symphony Orchestra Young Soloist Competition.

Please come along to support Sophie, Emma and the other musicians too.
